01What it is
What is mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a treatment in which a tailored combination of hyaluronic acid, vitamins, trace elements, amino acids and antioxidants is delivered to the skin in small microinjections. The active ingredients are delivered directly into the middle layer of the skin (the mesoderm), from which the treatment takes its name.
The treatment is used to revitalise and deeply moisturise the skin on the face, neck, décolletage and backs of the hands, and as a supportive treatment for the scalp for thinning hair.
02Background
Where does mesotherapy come from?
The method was developed by the French doctor Michel Pistor in the 1950s. Originally the technique was used to treat circulation and various ailments by delivering medicines locally in small doses to exactly the right area.
The principle, delivering active ingredients directly into the target tissue in small amounts as close as possible to the site of action, proved effective in skincare too. Over the decades it developed into today's aesthetic mesotherapy, which is widely used to improve skin quality.
03The science
Why direct delivery works
Creams applied to the skin mainly act in the outermost layer, since the skin's barrier layer is designed to keep substances out. In mesotherapy this barrier is bypassed and the active ingredients are delivered straight to where they are needed, so the effect is clearly more targeted.
Hyaluronic acid moisturises and fills the skin from within, vitamins and antioxidants support the skin's metabolism and protect the cells, and the microinjections themselves trigger a mild skin renewal response.
The end result is brighter, more moisturised and more vital skin. The effect builds up over the sessions as the skin's condition gradually improves.
04Suitability
Who is the treatment for?
Mesotherapy suits tired, dry skin with a dull tone and the prevention of the first signs of ageing. Targeted at the scalp, it supports the hair's growth environment and suits those concerned about thinning hair.
The treatment also works as a maintenance wellbeing treatment for the skin. The best result is achieved with a course of treatments, and suitability is assessed before treatment.
05Results
Results and duration
The skin often feels fresher after the first few sessions, but the clearest result becomes visible as the course of treatments progresses. Typically a series of a few treatments every few weeks is recommended.
After the series the result is maintained with occasional visits. The result is natural and develops at the pace of the skin's own renewal.
